The camp is located at the west end of the Los Prietos y Najalayegua, a Mexican Land Grant given to Jose Dominques September 23, 1845. The name is said to come from an Indian village at this end of the grant because of the dark skinned people who Iived there. Another story is that the Mission Fathers had a sheep ranch here where they kept the black sheep.
