Jim Blakley Notes
The Spanish name for "bare mountain" was aptly given. This is because even being over 6,000 feet, there are almost no pine or other trees common to the high mountain peaks of this area. Down on the west side of the peak there is a grove of Pinyon Pine trees similar to what is often found on mountains further east. Originally the pioneers called it Montecito Peale which is Spanish to indicate a low or small forest. There was another peak of this same name in the Santa Ynez Mountains back of Montecito so the name was changed to Monte Arido in about 1905 by the U.S. Geological Survey.
