Jim Blakley Notes
Elevation: 6490 ft. West Big Pine is a long ridge with a vertical 1,500' face that is easily seen from a great distance. West Big Pine is located about 1 mile west of Big Pine Road at Windy Gap on Trail 28W01. This trail, called The Big Pine Trail, continues on to Mission Pine Basin and finally to Cachuma Saddle.

In 1934 the Forest Service constructed a lookout tower on top of West Big Pine. In the 1960's the tower was removed because it was no longer used and was now within the San Rafael Wilderness.

Sierra Club Hundred Peaks Section Notes
The moutnain's name is derived from its proximity and location in reference to neighboring Big Pine Mountain which was named for the abundance and variety of pine covering its slopes.

The USFS constructed a fire lookout here consisting of a 10' open timber tower with a 14' by 14' wood cab (1934). It has since been dismantled. Its name first appears on AMS Big Pine Mountain quad in 1943. Itwas on the original 1946 HPS Peak List.
