The moutnain's name is derived from its proximity and location in reference to neighboring Big Pine Mountain which was named for the abundance and variety of pine covering its slopes.
The USFS constructed a fire lookout here consisting of a 10' open timber tower with a 14' by 14' wood cab (1934). It has since been dismantled. Its name first appears on AMS Big Pine Mountain quad in 1943. Itwas on the original 1946 HPS Peak List.
